Certain Plastics May Hurt Male Sexual Functioning

The more you’re exposed to the bisphenol A (BPA), the more trouble you’ll have getting erections and enjoying your sex life, suggests new research.

RODALE NEWS, EMMAUS, PA—The chemcial bisphenol A, or BPA, has been widely used in plastic products for more than 50 years. It's found in countless items we come in contact with every day, including water bottles, sports equipment, medical devices, dental fillings and sealants, eyeglass lenses, even CDs and DVDs. But the chemical has been getting a lot more attention lately as research points to BPA's unhealthy effects—so much so that both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have expressed concern. Now male sexual functioning can be added to the list of health problems linked to BPA exposure, a list that already includes cancer, diabetes, liver problems, and developmental problems and aggressive behavior in children.

Bisphenol A exposure could affect male hormone levels - study

New research has suggested that bisphenol A (BPA) could be responsible for altered hormone levels in men.

The US study by John D Meeker et al measured urinary concentrations of BPA and compared them to levels of serum thyroid and reproductive hormone levels in 167 men from an infertility clinic.

In an attempt to avoid the chemical toxin bisphenol-A (BPA) common in plastic water bottles, many consumers have made the switch to metal water bottles made from aluminum, stainless steel or another combination of metal.

If you’re new to the issue, BPA mimics the female hormone estrogen and may affect fertility and promote cancer. And just last year it came out that BPA may also lead to heart disease, diabetes and liver problems.

The chemical, which is widely used in plastic water bottles, can leach out of plastic during everyday use and even low levels have been linked to negative health effects.
