[CAVEAT: Not completely Vegan]

Simply put, your brain likes to eat. And it likes powerful fuel: quality fats, antioxidants, and small, steady amounts of the best carbs.

On a deadline? Need to rally? Avoid the soda, vending machine snacks and tempting Starbucks and go for these powerful brain boosters instead. The path to a bigger, better brain is loaded with Omega-3 fats, antioxidants, and fiber. Give your brain a kick start: eat the following foods on a daily or weekly basis for results you will notice.

20 foods that will supercharge your brain:

1. Avocado

Start each day with a mix of high-quality protein and beneficial fats to build the foundation for an energized day. Avocado with scrambled eggs provides both, and the monounsaturated fat helps blood circulate better, which is essential for optimal brain function. Worst alternative: a trans-fat-filled, sugar-laden cream cheese Danish.

Green it: you don’t need to buy an organic avocado – conventional is fine. But make sure your supplementary protein is free range, cage free, or organic.

2. Blueberries

These delicious berries are one of the best foods for you, period, but they’re very good for your brain as well. Since they’re high in fiber and low on the glycemic index, they are safe for diabetics and they do not spike blood sugar. Blueberries are possibly the best brain food on earth: they have been linked to reduced risk for Alzheimer’s, shown to improve learning ability and motor skills in rats, and they are one of the most powerful anti-stress foods you can eat. Avoid: dried, sweetened blueberries.

Green it: buy local and organic, and be mindful of seasonality. When blueberries are out of season, opt for cranberries, grapes, goji berries, blackberries or cherries to get your brain boost.

3. Wild Salmon

  1. This is not to contradict anyone here.
After all, one's DNA dictates a varied response
(on the effects of natural or manufactured food). My point being... some feel the benefits or ill effects right away while others, hardly).

I am the latter. I am an organic farmer of sorts
from the Philippines. I used to be very sickly
(it is the reason I began to grow my own food).
Let me rephrase that. We do not do any farming!

We are located in the isolated mountain fastness
of Mounts Isarog, Mayon, and Bulusan (volcanoes all) in Bicol Province, Philippines. Everything there naturally grows wild (red rice, fruits, herbs, vegetables). What we do is harvest from the wild, bring the wild produce down from the mountains by horse, mill the wild red rice in the lowlands, truck said red rice to the city to sell to Chinese food stores (I have stopped selling wild fruits-herbs- and vegetables because these spoil quickly, besides looking far smaller than the chemically-farmed ones).

One day, it dawned on me that I could not recall when I last got sick. Of anything! Not even the common cold or cough (something like seven years straight in a row). At the advent of the Internet, I read a research done by American nutritional scientists that wild red rice (Oryza Rufipogon, which incidentally is only found in the Philippines) contained 107 antioxidants and 68 vitamins and minerals). That explained it then. But hah, Filipinos really do not care about such nutritional information.

Through several means, including the Internet, I have been trying to find Buyers overseas for our wild red rice. One day (uh, five years ago I think), I received a call from a Filipino scientist who asked if I had such and such wild fruits, wild herbs, and wild vegetables. I asked what kind. He gave the names some of which I knew but most, I never heard of. I asked if he had samples of it. He E-mailed me photos and their natives names in different Philippines languages.

To make a long story short... this gentleman is a (cure-all elixir) formulator. Here in the Philippines, herbal supplement formulators are a dime a dozen. But this elixir was different in that, fruits and vegetables were also being used. And mostly were derived from the wild while he grew the rest in his farm at the foothills of Mount Banahaw (another volcano) in Quezon Province.

To date, his elixir has cured thousands of Filipinos of their so-called incurable diseases (with Stage-5 cancers topping the list). It is really unbelievable. But the desperately ill will readily believe despite their many doubts. And why not? They have been led to believe so after taking various supplements that had no effect (either it was their DNA or herbal supplement are lacking in cure elements).

This (cure-all) elixir continues to astound the formulator and amaze those who drink this fermented potion and baffle many of us who are involved in it. E-mail me at bpw.organicfarms@gmail.com should you want to know more or have questions.
